People Standards – Consigned to The Past? Take Another Look!

20 Apr 2018
Over the last 20 years there have been some well-regarded HR & people standards that have helped to shift the focus to their people. However, today organisations do not appear to have such accreditations as high on their agenda as they once did.

Through having discussions with businesses across sectors it would appear that there are several reasons why today such standards are just not as influential or seen as beneficial as they used to be: Here are a few that might resonate:

  • Pure investment in time versus other “hot topics”;
  • Absence of a standard that works alongside/compliments other accreditations held;
  • Value versus cost – seeing sufficient value-added outcomes to address key people & business challenges;
  • Organisations and their HR teams are much smarter at engaging with, and getting the best from their people and require a standard that supports, challenges and evaluates their people practices

What would make an organisation re-think?

 How about something new?

Organisations no matter what sector or size are likely to see tangible benefits from valuing their workforce in an environment which is fully supportive of achieving success through their people. Every employee, or potential employee has a ‘business wealth’ which in the right working environment, will contribute strongly to an organisations productivity and performance. Research has found that an engaged and involved workforce is a productive workforce

With this in mind, we would like to introduce the new people standard – BS 76000 Valuing your People, a British Standard that has been developed by BSI to evaluate how an organisation approaches valuing and engaging their workforce. However, the standard looks at much more than just procedures and policies but supports the connection of all relevant people practices to a common set of values and purpose forming a personal Valuing People framework. This allows an organisation to reflect and think about what practices and approaches they have in place to truly value their people with clear links to the business objectives and plans.  Leadership commitment to the People framework is fundamental and is measured as part of the standard to ensure that the Valuing People Framework is lived as everyday life rather than “we are doing it for XYZ Standard”. Live the benefits not the framework.

So where do you start?

Here at Inspiring Business Performance we support organisations across all sectors to work with and understanding how the standard sits alongside your people practices right through to the audit and successful accreditation, offering advice and support along the way.

Our support packages include consultancy and the price of accreditation and in most cases this package is less than other Standard’s assessments fees.
