Why you should be concerned about Cyber Crime
The myth is that cybercrime is about unwanted hacks into computer systems and that a keen firewall or password scheme is guaranteed to provide protection.
The reality is that at least 63% of the problem occurs due to staff error, where procedural safeguards have not been maintained. In other words, even robust electronic counter-measures are merely (and quite literally) less than half of the story.
Frightening statistics from highly credible sources are in the news every day. The Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2016 reports that 24% of all businesses detected one or more cyber security breaches in the last 12 months. However, only 51% of all businesses have attempted to identify the cyber security risks faced by their organisation.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that fraud and computer misuse accounted for 5.8 million crimes last year, 2.5 million of which were bank and credit card fraud. Computer virus attacks affected 1.4 million people and almost 650,000 people reported that their email or social media profile had been hacked.
One of the most insidious aspects is that some cyber criminals are targeting vulnerable people and perhaps even your family or children, to gain information that they can use to target your business.
